Burton Croft welcomes new students to Leeds!
There’s a lot to think about when moving to a new city and starting uni, many people forget about changing GP surgeries. Make sure you register as soon as you can so we are here to help you if you get sick or need support while at university.
We’ve added useful information below regarding the surgery, health concerns and local information to keep you informed.

TIP: If you are on repeat medications make sure you make one last order from your GP practice in your home town. Ask them to send it to a local pharmacy in Leeds. This means you shouldn’t run out while we get you registered. Once you are registered with us you will need a medication review before you can order from us.
Sexual Health
Leeds Sexual Health service offers Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) screening and treatment, HIV testing and contraception services. If you have any worries about your sexual health or would like to speak with a professional for reassurance, then please email the sexual health advice line on [email protected] or book an appointment to speak to us.
If you are experiencing symptoms, then please call the sexual health service appointment line on 0113 843 4495.

Contraception

You can now get the contraceptive pill for free from the Pharmacy, whether this is starting it for the first time or a repeat prescription – Find a pharmacy that offers the contraceptive pill without a prescription – NHS (www.nhs.uk). This may be a quicker option for you as the pharmacy can do all the checks without you needing an appointment.
Leeds Sexual Health can also start or continue contraception via their new online service – Leeds Sexual Health online contraception.
Long acting reversible contraceptives (LARC)
We currently hold IUD/S (“Coil”) clinics at the practice, and have additional appointments available for both IUD/S and Implant at our Ireland Wood weekend hub. If you are considering LARC or would like one fitted, please get in touch and we can get this organised for you.

Emergency contraception
Emergency contraception is available for free from a number of pharmacies in Leeds, the closest to Headingley are:

We advise that you ring ahead before attending a pharmacy, to ensure the pharmacist is available.
Mental Health
Starting University is an exciting time but does come with its challenges.
We have appointments available with the “Accessing Rapid Mental Health services” team. They can help patients with low level mental health issues. Find out more: Accessing Rapid Mental Health Services (ARMHS)
We also have appointments available with Social Prescribers. They deal with a number of issues such as:
- Low Mood/Depression/Anxiety
- Isolation/ Loneliness/Befriending
- Finances/Debt
- Bereavement
- Trauma
You can also self-refer to counselling services such as Leeds Mental Wellbeing Service which can be done online.
There are many resources available online specialising in improving mental health, particularly for young people.

Urgent Help
Urgent treatment centres are an alternative to A&E, that provides treatment for minor injuries and illnesses that are urgent but not life or limb threatening. If you need medical help but you know it’s not an emergency then the urgent treatment centre might be the best place for you. You can ring NHS 111 before going as they will be able to book you a slot, which will help with waiting times. They can help you with any of the following:
- Cuts & grazes, insect & animal bites, wounds and wound infections, skin infections/rashes/allergic reactions
- Sprains and strains
- Simple broken bones (if your bone is sticking out or there’s a serious wound then this should be seen at A&E)
- Minor burns and scalds
- Minor head and eye injuries
- Minor back injuries
- Emergency contraception
- Urine infections
- Raised temperature/fever

Urgent Dental treatment
- Call your dentist: some practices offer appointments at short notice.
- If you don’t have a dentist or it is our of normal surgery hours, call NHS 111.

Safety
Walksafe
WalkSafe Leeds is a free app to help you have safer and more enjoyable experiences when you are out around Leeds. For more information: WalkSafe Leeds.
Ask for Angela
Leeds is part of the Ask for Angela scheme. Many venues in both the city centre and suburbs are part of this scheme. If you feel uncomfortable in a situation participating venue, you can ask a staff member for ‘Angela’ to discreetly signal that you feel unsafe or threatened and would like assistance. Staff have been trained to help, they won’t judge and will aim to get people out of the situation without too much fuss, they can call you a taxi or provide a safe space.
Alcohol and Drugs
Forward Leeds
Forward Leeds has a wide range of services that support young people, adults and families in Leeds with alcohol and/or drug use. It is the service that our clinicians will refer you to if you need help, but you can also self-refer to the service.
